Christian sermon: do you fear God?

PASTOR ENOCH ADEBOYE

Memorise: “Take us the foxes, the little foxes, that spoil the vines: for our vines have tender grapes” (Songs of Solomon 2:15).

Read: Song of Solomon 2:12-15

Samson went into ministry without preparation. He built his ministry on the flesh- a sandy foundation even though the Holy Spirit was upon him. He had the anointing but his spirit man was very lean. He was heavily anointed but he was propelled, guided and led by his flesh. The fruit of the Spirit was hardly seen in his life. In his diary, there was no mention of self-denial, brokenness, fear of God, obedience to parents and separation from the world and its lusts. One thing that characterised his life was self-will. He went for whatever he wanted irrespective of existing laws either by God or man. Today, many people will describe him as a go-getter, an achiever, one who knows what he wants. His tragic end however did not come as a surprise to his parents and other God-fearing Israelite. Continue reading

Audio sermon: King Solomon as a tradegy

By Babatope Babalobi

Listen to the Audio sermon

The greatest tragedy of Solomon is that though he was divinely impacted with wisdom becoming the wisest man that ever lived, this wisdom turned into foolishness as he forsook God and served idols.

The concluding part of Solomon’s life was a story of avoidable sin resulting from compulsive sexual indulgence, crass materialism, unbridled idolatry, and intense hatred.

Solomon is a tragedy because in spite of his closeness with God early in his life, his fame, wisdom and wealth, it is very unlikely that he made heaven at death.

There is no biblical record that he repented of all his iniquities, and it would be a great tragedy if Solomon who gained the whole world has lost his place in the kingdom of God.

Lets us soberly meditate on the tragedy of Solomon through this tabular explanation of the paradoxes of his life:

Rise of Solomon Fall of Solomon
Solomon became famous- 1 King  Kings 2 vs. 12: Then sat Solomon upon the throne of David his father; and his kingdom was established greatly Solomon became materialistic and greedy- 1 Kings 10 vs. 25-26: And they brought every man his present, vessels of silver, and vessels of Gold, and garments, and amour, and spices, horses, and mules, a rate year by year

And Solomon gathered together chariots and horsemen: and had a thousand and four hundred chariots, and twelve thousand horsemen

Solomon lived in Holiness and Righteousness – 1 Kings 3 vs. 3:  And Solomon loved  the Lord walking in the statutes of David his father: Solomon goes in sin- Adultery  and disobedience 1 kings 11 vs. 1-3: But the King Solomon loved many strange women…of the nations concerning which the Lord had said unto the children of Israel, Ye shall not go in unto them…..and he had seven hundred wives, princesses, and three hundred concubines, and his wives turned away his heart. (Jehovah had warned against this. Deut. 17 vs. 17- Neither shall he multiply wives to himself, that his heart not turned away: neither shall he greatly multiply to himself and gold)
Solomon  walked with God: 1 Kings 3 vs. 5:In Gibeon the Lord appeared to Solomon in a dream by night: and God said: Ask what I shall give thee

Solomon walked with Satan 1 Kings 11 vs. 4: For it came to pass when Solomon was old, that his wives turned away his heart after other gods: and his heart was not perfect: with the Lord his God, as was the heart of David his father.

God loves Solomon- 1 Kings 9 vs. 2 and 5: That the Lord appeared to Solomon the second time…I will establish the throne of thy kingdom upon Israel for ever, as I promised David thy father. God angry with Solomon-1 Kings 11 vs. 9-11: And the Lord was angry with Solomon….I will surely rend the kingdom from thee, and give it to thy servant.

1 Kings 11 vs. 31: Behold, I will rend the kingdom out of the hand of Solomon, and will give ten tribes to thee

Solomon promised long life- 1 Kings 3 vs. 14: And if thou wilt walk in my ways, to keep my statutes and my commandments, as thy father David did walk, then I will lengthen thy days Solomon died untimely at age about 60-1 Kings 11 vs. 42-43: And the time that Solomon reigned in Jerusalem over all Israel was forty years. And Solomon slept with his fathers, and was buried (Solomon was about 20 years when he became King and reigned for 40 years. See 1 Kings 2 vs. 12 – 11 vs.43; 2 chr.1 vs. 1-9,31)
God blesses Solomon-1 Kings 4  vs. 29:

And God gave  Solomon wisdom and understanding exceeding much, and largeness of heart,

God plans evil against Solomon-1 Kings 11 vs. 14, 23: And the Lord stirred up an adversary unto Solomon…and  God stirred him up another adversary
Solomon as a prayer warrior-1 Kings 8 vs. 14: And the King turned his face about, and blessed all the congregation of Israel: (and all the congregation of Israel stood Solomon becomes  an Idolator-1 Kings 11 vs. 5: For Solomon went after Ashtoreth the goddess of the Zidonians, and after Milcom the abomination of the Ammonites
Solomon led the people to God-1 Kings 8 vs. 21: And Solomon stood before the altar of the Lord in the presence of all the congregation of Israel, and spread forth his hands toward heaven Solomon led the people to idols-1 Kings 11 vs. 7-8: Then did Solomon build an high place for Chemosh the abomination  of Moab…and likewise, did he for all strange wives, which burnt  incense and sacrificed unto gods
Solomon preaches repentance- Kings 8 vs. 33: When thy people Israel  be smitten down before the enemies, because they have sinned against thee, and confess thy name, and pray, and make supplication unto thee in this house; Then hear thou in heaven, and forgive the sin of thy people Israel Solomon becomes hardened in sin, unrepentant and plans to commit murder-1 Kings 11 vs. 40: And Solomon sought therefore to kill Jeroboam. And Jeroboam arose, and fled Egypt…until the death of Solomon

Several lessons could be learnt from the story of the rise and fall of Solomon.

1.      Blessings are from God. God blesses people with various gifts, and in the specific case of Solomon he was mightily blessed with the gift of wisdom.

Anyone who desires a blessing form God, he should make a request. James 1 vs. 5 says: If any of you lack wisdom, let him asks of God, that giveth to all men liberally, and upbraideth not, and it shall be given him.

2.      God loves his children and communicates with them. Solomon was on talking terms with God early in his life because his ways were pleasing to God. We should also seek to develop and keep a friendly relationship with God. As a Christian you should be engaging in conversations with God, talking to him and hearing from him.

3.      Another lesson from the life of Solomon is that the blessings of God is conditional, and can only be fulfilled by obedience. God promised to lengthen the days of Solomon meaning he supposed to die at a good old age, but Solomon died at age about 60 (was about 20 years old when he became King and reigned for 4o years). The promises of God will only be fulfilled if we continue to serve God in total obedience.

4.      It is possible for anyone to backslide. Solomon loved God with al his heart early in his life, was a prayer warrior, Preacher, and Teacher of the gospel, and had a one to one relationship with God, but he ended up lifting up the altars of Satan. We must continuously read the Bible, pray, and fellowship with the brethren in order to remain in stead with God.

5.      The experience of Solomon also shows that all the wealth and pleasures of this world is vain. Solomon had a harem of women, horses, gold, silver, and gifts but was not satisfied. Self control, contentment, and discipline are virtues every Christian should desire.

The rise and fall of Solomon is a great lesson to all Christians, especially those in authority. If we forsake God, God will forsake us. If we reject God, he will cast us to the devil. God wrote the first chapters of Solomon’s life, but Satan wrote the concluding chapters.

One Bible commentator said that though Solomon was reputed to be the wisest man on earth that ever lived, yet he also became the most foolish man on earth that ever lived.

It is unlikely that Solomon made heaven, because unlike the case of David, there is no biblical record of is repentance. What a tragedy.

For those of us alive, now is the best time to make our ways right with God so that the judgment of God would be in our favor.  If you are never accepted the plans of God for you then you remained a fool in the league of Solomon. If you have backslide like Solomon, you have an opportunity to rewrite your history before you death.Jesus is the way and the truth towards your salvation. Accept Jesus as your Lord and Savior today if you do not want your life to end in a tragedy like that of Solomon. Say this simple prayer: Jesus the son of God, I come to you today, just as I am. I confess that is a Sinner, I repent from my sins.

And pray that you forgive me my sins by the mercy in your blood. I promise to go and sin no more. I invite the Holy Spirit to rule my life in Jesus name. I am born again.

Abraham’s blessing is my portion

Genesis 24 vs.1 – And Abraham was old, and well stricken in age: and the LORD had blessed Abraham in all things.

1. God blessed Abraham financially. He had cattle, silver and gold.
2. God blessed Abraham maritally – his children were uncountable as sands of the sea.
3. God gave him good health – he lived long.
4. God won his battles for him – his enemies were afraid of him.
5. God blessed Abraham spiritually – he talked to God one on one.
6. The secret of Abraham’s blessings was obedience and faithfulness to God.
7. Decide to obey God today!

What is the ‘But’ in your life?

Genesis 11 vs. 30 - But Sarai was barren; she had no child.

The agenda of the enemy is to ensure there is a ‘But’ in the life of every Christian. It is common to find a Christian facing a stubborn long standing problem. There is a particular, specific problem that is always tied to the life of each Christian.

The challenge is to overcome the problem and have a complete life of victory.

A Christian family may be prosperous and have enough money to afford comfort of life ‘but’ they may not have a happy home because either partner is cheating.

A Christian family may be prosperous and happy and love themselves intensely ‘but’ they may be childless or child bearing may cease after one child.

A young single Christian may have a good job ‘but’ find it difficult to get a marriage partner.

Two young Christians may be ready for marriage ‘but’ both of them may be jobless.

A Christian family may have a happy marriage with male and female children ‘but’ their income may be poor forcing them to live in perpetual poverty.

Your case may be different from the above, but I am persuaded there is a ‘but’ in your life.

The ‘but’ in your life is that stubborn problem that seems to defy prayers, that long-standing difficulty that has remained with you inspite of your long years of faithful service to God, years of paying tithes and offerings, years of giving, years of living in holiness and years of attending church meetings and deliverance service.

What is the ‘but’ in your life. The ‘But’ in the life of Abraham and Sarah was that Sarah ishis wife was barren.

1. Abraham was an obedient Christian, ‘but’ his wife was barren.
2. Abraham walked with God, ‘but’ his wife was barren.
3. Abraham was perfect before God, ‘but’ his wife was barren
4. Abraham had a covenant with God, ‘but’ his wife was barren.
5. God spoke to him one to one, ‘but his wife was barren.
6. Abraham was faithful in paying tithes. He was the first person recorded in the Bible to pay tithes, ‘but’ his wife was barren.
7. At the age of 75 years, God promised Abraham he will be the father of nations ‘but’ until age 99 his wife was barren.
8. Abraham was an intercessor and prayer warrior, ‘but’ his wife Sarah remained barren for up to 25 years.
9. According to Genesis 20 vs.17, Abraham prayed for Abimelech and his wife, and his maidservants, who were all barren and they conceived and bore children ‘but’ his on wife Sarah remained barren.
10. Abraham was rich and wealthy. The Bible says he was not only rich, but very rich in cattle, silver and gold, ‘but’ his wife was barren.
11. What do we say of Sarah, she was extremely beautiful, a queen ‘but’ she was barren.

Pray like this:
• God of Abraham, give me blessings, money cannot buy in Jesus name.
• God give me a child that beauty cannot buy in Jesus name.

Inspite of Abraham’s closeness with God, there were times he was confused, dejected frustrated and disappointed.

You may be experiencing a similar situation because of the ‘but’ in your life, that problem/difficulty that has become unapproachable, stigma, affliction and mountain in your life, the good news is that the story of Abraham’s life did not end with ‘but’. Yours should not also end with a ‘but’ in Jesus name.

At the age 100, God visited Sarah and she bore a child who later become the father of the 12 tribes of Israel.

Three things may be responsible for the ‘but’ in the life of a Christian.

The ‘but’ in your life may be caused because it is not yet the appointed time for it to be rolled away. The Bible records in Genesis 21 vs. 2 that God visited Sarah at the ‘set time’. My prayer is that you shall not miss your set time in Jesus name.

The ‘but’ in your life may be the hand work of the devil. In the book of Daniel, we learnt Daniel a servant of God prayed and fasted for 21 days, ‘but’ his prayers were unanswered because of hindrances by the Prince of Persia.

I pray for you that as many powers of darkness that are sponsoring a ‘but’ in your life in forms of failure, sickness, stagnancy, barreness, poverty, delayed marriages, profitless handwork, marital crises, academic failure etc. I command the destroying Angels of God, the Angels that destroyed Sodom and Gomorrah to destroy them in Jesus name.

The ‘but’ in your life can also be self inflicted. If you have not totally surrendered your life to Christ, if you are still living in sin, if you are yet to start serving God, there is going to be several ‘buts’ in your life.

To eradicate the ‘buts’ in your life, surrender your life to Christ today and let the Holy Spirit intervene in your buts

Valentine messages: the true meaning of Saint Valentine’s day

Genesis 1 vs. 5: ‘And God called the light Day, and the darkness he called Night. And the evening and the morning were the first day’

So, February 14, itself is not an evil day. All days are created by God for its glory. If you are celebrating Valentine’s Day, ensure you celebrate it to the glory of God.

Dedicate the day to God, and ask the Holy Spirit how you should celebrate it.

Make new friends in your working places and schools.

Appreciate your old friends by sending them gifts.

Appreciate your parents and those that have helped you in one way or the other in life, be sending notes or gifts.

If you need to go for a drink or food, ensure you are in good company and your safety is not compromised.

Most importantly, refrain from any associations or acts that may cause you to sin. Either by what you drink, what you see, or where you go. Valentine’s Day is not meant for illicit sex.

Discuss this over with your friend that you do not intend to have sexual relationship with him on this day and watch where you go, and whom you are with alone.

Watch out for date raping. Don’t go out with anyone you do not trust, and if you must go out with a single watch where you go.

Avoid environments that promote ungodliness. This includes night clubs, discos, and sex shows.

The best place to spend Valentine’s Day is the presence of God. God is the greatest Valentine who gave us his only begotten son for our salvation. Arrange to be in the presence of God- either Church or fellowship and thank God for his love on you.

If you do not have anyone as a Valentine, remember God is the greatest Valentine you can ever have. He is the greatest lover. Pour you love on him, with songs of thanksgiving.

Bible principles for success: Humility

Genesis 13 vs. 8-10And Abram said unto Lot, Let there be no strife, I pray thee, between me and thee, and between my herdmen and thy herdmen; for we be brethren. Is not the whole land before thee? separate thyself, I pray thee, from me: if thou wilt take the left hand, then I will go to the right; or if thou depart to the right hand, then I will go to the left. And Lot lifted up his eyes, and beheld all the plain of Jordan, that it was well watered every where, before the LORD destroyed Sodom and Gomorrah, even as the garden of the LORD, like the land of Egypt, as thou comest unto Zoar.

  1. Though Abraham was the uncle of Lot, he still gave Lot the right of first choice.
  2. Lot in his foolishness and pride accepted to choose first before his uncle and ended up Continue reading
